on friday’s today show ashley judd was on and she opened up about her past battles with depression. this is a subject near and dear to my heart and i think there is not enough public discussion about it.
in her new movie which debuted at sundance but is going to DVD, HELEN, she plays a women struggling with depression. during her interview with kathy lee and hoda she talked about having reservations playing this character because of her own battle with the disease.Vodpod videos no longer available.
I really loved everything she had to say and wish more people were speaking out about this. having battled with the disease for most of my adult life, i know the stigma that surrounds it and how detrimental it can be to one’s family and loved ones. i love seeing prominent people speak out about their battles and hope to one day do the same thing.
at 1:50 hoda asks ashley about the common conception that depresses people are just unhappy. i LOVE LOVE LOVE her response to this and hope that the stigma that depresses people can just snap out of their episode can be erased. i also hope see her speak out and having more people give a name to the disease will help those struggling with it understand that it is just like any other disease and nothing to be ashamed of.
